Ear Infections in Dogs


Dogs and cats are often prone to ear infections. We all know that dogs and cats have an amazing sense of hearing, and when they have ear infection, discomfort and extreme pain is experienced. Because of the wax, dirt and parasites can easily become trapped and consequently lead to an ear infection.

The most common ear infections that are considered pets include otitis externa (infection of the external ear canal) and otitis media (middle ear infection). Ear infections tend to affect certain dog breeds more than others.

Dog breeds such as cocker spaniels, poodles miniature Schnauzers and develop frequent ear infections while in cats, Persian breeds are also more susceptible to these infections. The ear infections can lead to more serious problems such as hearing loss and neurological difficulties. However, with proper diagnosis and prompt treatment, ear infections can be treated successfully.

Common symptoms and signs of an ear infection include:

* Shakes head and one hand holding it

Scratching at the ears *

* Pain in the ear

* Rub your ears against furniture or carpet

* Download yellow, brown or black in the ears

* The ears are red, swollen or tender

* Foul odor from the ears

Also, if a middle ear infection develops, symptoms of facial paralysis can occur. The lids of your pet can be tilted with the facial muscles, difficulty swallowing and loss of balance.

What causes ear infections?

Most ear infections are caused by bacterial or yeast infections. Other factors may also contribute to ear infections include accumulation of wax, dirt, thick hair, matted trapped in the ear canal or other foreign bodies. Allergies, ear mites, ulceration, tumors, improper cleaning of the ear or hearing impaired drainage can also cause ear infection.

Diagnosis of ear infections

The diagnosis of an infection of the middle or inner ear is based on symptoms and a careful examination of the ear. Your veterinarian will perform an otoscopic examination to see the ear canal and to determine if the eardrum is intact.

If the eardrum is broken or filled with fluid, this is usually a sign of an infection of the middle and inner ear. Anesthesia or sedation may also be used if the pet is too painful otoscopy. Radiographs and a sample of the material in the ear canal are taken and examined under a microscope to determine the cause of the infection.

Help for ear infections

The treatment for ear infections depends on the underlying cause and severity of infection. Conditions often underlying such as allergies, tumors or polyps can cause ear infections, but if treated immediately, can greatly reduce the infection. Medications to treat symptoms of ear infection include antibiotics or antifungal drugs.

Cleaning the ears of your pet will also be recommended on a daily basis, and your vet show you how to do this properly without damaging your furry friend. In more severe cases, surgical procedures involving an incision in the eardrum, the removal of the ear canal or ear bony cover may be required.
