Summer Fantasy Book Reading for teens and young adults

Some Classics

A Wrinkle in Time - (Newberry Medal Winner) It is simply a beautiful book that has blazed a trail in the imagination of modern children's children by offering a story of several children who embark on a great adventure, in this case to save their father. There are some fascinating things in this book as the stars of life and tesseracts. It is a perennial favorite and on the list of each library.

A Wizard of Earthsea - Written by Ursula K. LeGuin this is the first book in a series called The Earthsea series. Short and slight, but amazingly beautiful. This first book in the series follows a boy named Ged, as he goes from being a herd of goats to a simple powerful wizard. It 's just nice and brings out some wonderful and magical themes as the concept that everything (including dragons) has a secret name. And if you know the secret name, you can control everything (including dragons).

The Hobbit - This probably should not be on this list, but it's so good you can not leave out. With the huge success of the absolute Lord of the Rings film, this book can be neglected, but I feel better! It 's also in the works to be a film.

Five children and - this is one of the most famous books written by Edith Nesbit, who is often credited with creating all kind of children who take fantasy adventures. His books are public domain now and can be easily found for free. The theme of this book is: Be careful what you ask. You can get it! This is the message in this delightful tale of five boys who discover a bizarre sand creature that grants wishes. There is a catch, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse yet, things often get out of hand!

Dragonflight - This book is a bit 'more complex than the previous ones I mentioned here and tends towards being more of a novel for adults, but very suitable for teens. We are introduced in a complex world of dragons through Lessa main character. This book is often credited with being the book that launched many young girls writing career. And 'the first book of a trilogy of books called Dragon Riders of Pern series.

A Princess of Mars: - The first novel in the series by Edgar Rice Burroughs and currently in the early stages of being written in a movie or animation that will be created by Pixar. This is the first book in a series called John Carter of Mars and is rollicking good fun in the tradition of the old pulp magazines. It 'a favorite for young boys who love sword fighting big monsters.

Contemporary Fantasy and Science Fiction

When it comes to modern fantasy for children, there is an enormous selection from which to choose, and that, by itself, it may be an obstacle. Here are summaries of some of the most popular and I also got some 'that are currently expected to be made into a film.

Artemis Fowl Series - This series of books takes a bit 'of an unusual position with regard to children's books because they had a genius Artemis Fowl is twelve and a criminal mind. The author of these books called Die Hard with Fairies! And the books are often characterized as a high-octane racing and overwhelming. This is a very popular series of books with a great website and also a wiki. There are currently five books in the series and the first is simply titled Artemis Fowl. The sixth book, "The Time Paradox" is set to be released in July of 2008.

Here, we will be Dragons - The title itself is rather mysterious and back to another time. This was the phrase that cartographers used to write in sea areas which have been unexplored. The basic premise of this story will really resonate with kids who are fans of fantasy itself, because it begins with the unusual encounter of three young foreigners John, Jack and Charles on a rainy night in London. We then find these three young JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and Charles Williams.

The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches - This is a book series that takes place in a world of magic and secrets called Ruin Mist. This book was slow to start, but the word of mouth has become a best seller. And 'one of those relatively unknown books and series that is very satisfying.

Septimus Heap - If magic and wizards have a special appeal this series of books are a great alternative to Harry Potter. The main character (Septimus) is the seventh son of a seventh son and the main line of the story follows two children passed at birth: a boy destined to become a magician and a girl destined to become a princess. There are currently four books in the series and the first book was acquired by Warner Brothers and is currently in a movie due out in 2010.

Each of these books or series will launch adolescents and young adults in an extraordinary adventure in fantasy worlds and strange without a joystick or keyboard is required....
